Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) stands as the most prevalent behavioural disorder during childhood and adolescence, impacting roughly 3% to 5% of children before the age of seven.
This condition primarily manifests in children in their early school years and throughout puberty, with many patients exhibiting improvement as they grow older.
While the precise cause of ADHD in most patients remains
unclear, it is believed to be a complex disorder influenced by genetic
predispositions and environmental factors. Notably, specific causes such as
trauma and brain infections have been identified in some cases. Genetic factors
play a significant role in ADHD, particularly in the fathers of children with
hyperactivity, yet environmental influences also contribute substantially to
the condition's severity. ADHD is more prevalent in boys than girls, with a
ratio of two to four times. Infants who experience nutritional or health issues
in their first month of life or whose mothers smoked or consumed alcohol during
pregnancy are at an increased risk of developing ADHD.
